She revels in encouraging them to tap into her experience helping them to succeed as professional creators.

Due to the impending first lockdown Lesley had a plan for the group’s 2020 “actual” exhibitions. They were re-presented as ART360, a virtual event which started as live interviews from artists’ studios, but has already grown into a diverse and international event.

Due to “IT” issues resulting in poor quality visuals my first interview with Lesley was published as a podcast. Here’s that interview. If you have questions of your own, please do just drop me a line I would love to hear from you.

It’s been an amazing experience, actually being a part of an art exhibition in my own right. Not only represented in the artist’s work that I’ve framed, but actually representing myself, my business and my skills.

It started way back during the first Covid lockdown in 2020. A group of us who already knew each other through various creative networks continued to meet weekly via good old Zoom. It proved to be a really powerful new kind of norm. We’re a mixed bunch, of backgrounds, skills and interests.

Having met for many months, Axiom emerged described as a group of Kent creatives who “connected in a time of disconnect”. A germ of an idea formed as restrictions started to lift, we should mount an exhibition. It would be an unusual exhibition because a picture framer and a branding designer would be represented alongside artists specialising in various mediums. How would these “non-artists” be represented?

Stella Chapman of Salt Design had already created the group’s logo, website and social media platforms’ so a brand and standard had already been set. It was natural that she should control the promotion of the exhibition with beautifully designed physical posters, meeting the needs of the gallery and similarly designed social media posts. At the exhibition Salt Design’s physical presence was minimal save to say each artist’s statement was beautifully branded and presented, but it didn’t stop there. A review of Axiom’s first exhibition featured in “Salt: Works”, Salt Design’s newspaper for artists, movers and makers. It also featured articles contributed by a number of exhibitors. These stylish newspapers were available for all visiting the exhibition to take a copy.

So how was Edge represented? For technical reasons proposed video demonstrations didn’t happen, but inspired by a recently completed prestigious job I framed the same image five times using five different mount techniques, and mouldings. Not only did this show how changes in colour, technique, scale and moulding alters an image, accompanying each were notes explaining how and why each was completed. For me, just as important were the easy to read notes explaining the importance of quality framing and how it protects artwork. Examples of damaged work were available showing what to avoid when having artwork framed.

Hosted by Nucleus Arts’ Halpern Gallery, “Exposed” featuring contemporary/abstract paintings by Zel Hunt and France Tetreault and fused glass, sculpture and watercolours by Jeanette Cook was an amazing success on so many levels. Described by visitors as, “More white cube of serious work than salon of Sunday painters”. “One of the best exhibitions ever to be held at the Halpern Gallery”. “Like all good exhibitions, it leaves you wanting more”; and “Really professional and beautifully displayed” is something we should all be proud of.

By the magic of video (which I’m still practising), I bring you “Exposed”. I hope you enjoy.

“I always get a prickle of excitement when I receive a cry for help from an upset client. Why? Because it’s my opportunity to turn sadness into happiness, and this little project is a perfect example.

Awakened one morning by an almighty crash, my client investigated each room of her home to find that a favourite large Russell Flint had fallen from the wall, knocked over an alabaster lamp base, slid down the wall behind the TV and came to rest across a number of electrical plugs, and adaptors. The consequence of which was significant damage to the bottom mitres of the picture frame. Luckily the glass hadn’t broken so the print remained undamaged and the multiple hand decorated mounts had stayed intact.

So to work I went. I started by carefully removing the work from the framing package, checked everything over for damage and placed the work into the plan chest for safe keeping. The bottom two corners of the frame were too badly damaged to re-glue, so I eased the corners apart far enough to remove six “V” nails used to secure the corners. The exposed mitres were tidied up enough to remake the joint as tight as possible. Taking note of the position of the original fixings the mitre faces were glued and underpinned into new material. However because the moulding had not been freshly cut the joints made were not as close as I would have liked, so with a little help from strategically placed veneer pins, the joints were closed up a little more and when the glue had dried, were strong enough to take the weight of the glass again. This was also an opportunity for me to clean the glass thoroughly, both inside and out. Due to atmospheric changes in the framing package, a shadowy imprint of the mount had formed on the glass.

Now came the good bit. The repaired frame was made ready to receive the glass, which was given a final clean and checked for chips. Removing the work from the drawer, it was dusted off with a large fine brush and laid into the frame with the damaged mitres forming the top corners. The reason for this? Two fold. Theoretically the damaged corners should now be stronger than they were originally, but as a safety measure (should they not be), at the top of the frame they’re under less pressure from the weight of the glass. Secondly the eye rarely comes to rest on the top edge and corners of a picture frame, so any damage that can’t be repaired doesn’t become a focal point. A new backing board was cut and fixed in place, and the work checked for any stray material that may have been sucked in during assembly. Taped up and sealed, hanging fixings were replaced securely into new timber. The force of the work hitting the floor had opened up the grain of the timber and loosened screws, fixing into new timber reduces the possibility of a similar accident occurring again. Assembly completed, the originally damaged corners were filled and colour matched, and I tweaked the “intact” corners. The print was finally reunited with its owner, who was delighted with the result and the speed of the repair, giving me a great sense of achievement and feeling rewarded by a very satisfied, grateful and happy client.

So why had the picture fallen from the wall in the first place? Brass wire had been used to hang the work and because brass is so soft, over a period of time one by one each of the strands making up the ply had broken until the wire couldn’t support the weight of the picture any longer, so it snapped.

There are a number of lessons here for both framers and their clients. Clients should try to avoid hanging pictures directly over obstacles, and perhaps we should advise against this; had the electrical fittings not been below the picture the damage to the frame may have been reduced or even avoided if it had landed on the floor. Hanging pictures on wire is great in that it doesn’t stretch, however in time it does have a tendency to fail, and there are a number of alternative options available. The biggest lesson of all though, and this is where we framers can gain caring/sharing Brownie points is to advise clients to regularly check their artwork, give it an annual “health check” for anything that might be failing or changing. Better still; show them what to look for. Had this print been checked over the failing wire could have been spotted and replaced, preventing the accident. If clients are not confident about what they’re looking for offer them an artwork health check service, even as a loss leader it’s a great promotional tool.”

Born a Lincolnshire “Yella Belly”

I popped into the world too many years ago to a traditional Lincolnshire family, and the disappointment of my Dad, because I wasn’t a boy. Sibling rivalry began when my brother arrived five-years later, and although he was a brighter spark than me, he lacked perseverance.

Education, freedom, experimentation

This wasn’t a problem for me; my bloody mindedness meant good grades and a place at Croydon Art College studying textile design. Oh joy to the world, freedom to experiment, create and play with textiles, colour and pattern.

The big wide world

Following college and navigating the world of employment, it’s funny how an off the cuff question can spin you around, asking the question “Need any help?” resulted in me working with and learning from Aza Adlam the best picture framer in Bristol.

Square peg in a round hole

Promotion for hubby and a move to Kent created more opportunities for me, and I’m not quite sure how it happened but I spent a soul-destroying period with a local authority battling bureaucracy, managers and the public. I was definitely a square peg in a round hole.

True friendship

My fairy godfather bought a collection of picture framing equipment and invited me use it, any time I liked. He didn’t want to go into partnership, and after struggling with the ethics of setting myself up in competition, I did anyway (he’s still a good mate by the way).

Oops! She’s over

By spring 2012 the quality of my work was getting around, I created a studio and was on my way, but forced into a six-month ‘break’ after a rather inconvenient accident. (Nothing to do with knives or blades by the way).

Passion in my life

Life I’m now lovin’. I’m a member of The Fine Art Trade Guild and write for its trade magazine. I’m constantly banging on (blogging) about the creative and technical aspects of picture framing, which helps clients understand the decisions they need to make.

Picture framing is a passion, and my mission is to help clients, creatives and galleries bring out the best in their artwork, help protect special items that have been passed down through families, destined for future generations.

I love working with clients on major projects, like Kathryn Rennie, a talented artist whose inaugural exhibition in her Canterbury gallery was in March 2016, Ann Walker-Parry of Fenster Arts, who works to get art into public spaces and into the working environment. But a particularly rewarding interest is nurturing creative talent in youngsters by sponsoring children’s art competitions.

I think Dad would have been proud.

Sometimes in life you are given an opportunity to do something special for someone, and from our experience of this project, my advice would be take up every opportunity.

It was a real privilege to frame this T-shirt for a very special young lady. At just 5 years old Paige endured lifesaving surgery. On Mother’s day 2008 her family received the phone call they had been waiting for, an organ match had been found for Paige and she was to be admitted immediately to Kings College Hospital in London.

In 2013, organised by the Rays of Sunshine charity a lifelong wish to see One Direction in concert was finally realised. Not only that, Paige was to meet the guys and be presented with this signed T-shirt. Understanding what this meant to Paige, Mum rallied round to find a way to put it permanently in pride of place, which is where we came in. Paige’s treasured T-shirt is now on display and she can say “Hi” to the guys every time she walks into her room. We designed and created a mount and box frame and supported the garment to maintain its shape. It’s now protected from “touchy feely fingers” and UV acrylic slows light damage prolonging the life of the shirt and those precious autographs for very many years. Acrylic was chosen over glass as an effective precaution against over excitable teenagers. For very many years Paige will smile to herself as she glances at the T-shirt and remembers that very special day.
