Art evokes an emotional response in us all. Happy memories, feelings and moods wash over us in response to living with it, which is why it’s a wonderful tool for adding character and putting your own stamp on your home. It can be used to add drama, highlight properties or disguise a room’s problems achieving a balance for your space. But most of all you should love it; have a personal connection with it. Art doesn’t need to be expensive, elitist or high-end; it needn’t even be a painting. It could be anything in any medium, two or three dimensional; but what it should do is reflect your personality and characterise your home.

Choose art because you love it, use it to inspire, to influence your colour scheme and set the mood for your room. Take elements from it to create individuality and instantly you have an interior that could only be yours. Solve decorating and spatial problems by using art to open a space up, or cosy it down. For example, lengthen a room by hanging work with an obvious horizontal bias; enhance this further by hanging work in “landscape” format.

To live with art you will want to view it often and the best way to do this is to frame it. The style of the frame and presentation is heavily influenced by the artwork itself, but it can also be used to reinforce the style of your interior. Use it as an architectural accent, the picture frame has a close relationship with timber detailing such as skirting boards and architraves. Whatever your design style, incorporating it in the picture frame ensures a sense of harmony in your room.
